Avoiding carbon leakage from nature-based offsets by design

چکیده

With nature-based offsets emerging as a core strategy for meeting near-term climate targets, it is essential they deliver real and verifiable mitigation gains. However, the interventions that generate can have unintended effects cause carbon leakage ultimately reduce mitigation. Although "old news" various anti-leakage measures been considered, there little evidence current practices to address actually work. In this perspective, we present vastly underestimated in practice argue efforts improve accounting methods are unlikely accuracy required. We therefore propose elaborate an alternative approach by design, based on new conceptual framework understanding interventions. further outline three principles offset developers, certifiers, consumers implement now credibility of offsets, without negating ambition investment solutions. Avoiding mangrove destruction by avoiding carbon dioxide emissions.

T ens of millions of tons of CO2 emissions from mangrove deforestation may be avoided each year at an average cost of less than $10 per ton CO2, conclude Siikamäki et al. in their study (1) in PNAS. Avoiding CO2 emission from mangroves would have the beneficial side effect of protecting biodiversity. With careful selection of areas to be protected, increased protection of biodiversity could be ...

Building a Credible Carbon Offsets

Bradford Gentry opened the workshop by addressing the variability in prices that Yale encountered when it was shopping for renewable energy credits (RECs). What does it mean if one REC is priced at $38 per ton of CO2 equivalent while another one goes for $10/ton of CO2 equivalent, for example? Gentry suggested that the wide variety of green technologies available may account for this disparity,...

Estimating Leakage from Forest Carbon Sequestration Programs

Leakage from forest carbon sequestration—the amount of a program’s direct carbon benefits undermined by carbon releases elsewhere—depends critically on demanders’ ability to substitute non-targeted timber for timber targeted by the program. Analytic, econometric, and sector-level optimization models are combined to estimate leakage from different forest carbon sequestration activities. Empirica...

Internationally, Energy-from-Waste (EfW) facilities in emerging economies are eligible for carbon offset credits under the Clean Develo...
